Striped Bass in the News
I always like to hear about anglers catching fish so I was pleased last week when I received an e-mail from a friend about striped bass. He wrote that he had heard of some big striped bass being caught around Port Hawkesbury. Cape Breton is no stranger to big stripers as the fish make regular visits to our waters.
Miramichi River conservationists say a case of fish-on-fish violence may be one of the main reasons for the plummeting Atlantic salmon stocks being witnessed on the river system's northwest branch.
Since the current limit in this area for striped bass is zero, it's strictly accidental catch and immediate release. While this may frustrate those intent on catching a trout or a salmon, there are reports of anglers hooking and releasing 20 to 40 striped bass in an hour in the Newcastle area during a full tide.
